Translating the media: Syrian protests widen عبارات ومصطلحات

Here are some useful phrases and vocabulary from recent media reports on events in Syria as well the speech given by President Bashar alAssad

 رفع حالة الطوارىءlifting the state of emergency (i.e. the Emergency Laws)

الأسبوع المقبل كحد أقصى next week at the latest

خطاب تصالحي a conciliatory speech 

 حزمة متكاملة من القوانين a complete or integrated package of laws

" سوريا تمر بمرحلة دقيقة تتعرض فيها إلى مؤامرات" Syria is going through a critical [delicate] period in which it’s being subjected to conspiracies.

“إما أن يؤدي الى الوحدة الوطنية أو يفككها” It will lead either to national unity or its undoing.

The model that best suits Syrian society [lit. the best model that is appropriate for Syrian society’].

ونقلت وكالة رويترز عن ناشط حقوقي في بانياس قوله إن المتظاهرات رددن شعار "لا سنية ولا علوية، نحن نريد الحرية".

The news agency Reuters quoted a human rights activist in Baniyas who said that the women demonstrators shouted the slogan “Neither Sunni, nor Alawi, we want freedom’.

وجهت نداء إلى السلطات السورية للامتناع عن اللجوء الى العنف ضد شعبها

 She [Hilary Clinton] directed a plea to the Syrian authorities to refrain from resorting to violence against its people.

تشهد مدينة حمص حالة من الفوضى الأمنية

The city of Homs is witnessing a chaotic state of security [lit. a state of security chaos]

ارتكبت قوات الأمن مجزرة في المدينة 

the security forces committed a massacre in the city

قال شهود عيان إن 4 أشخاص قُتلوا برصاص القوات السورية خلال تشييع جنازة 

 Eye-witnesses said that 4 people were killed by Syrian forces’ bullets during a funeral procession

كما شهدت العاصمة دمشق مسيرة احتجاجية لليوم الثاني على التوالي 

The capital Damascus also witnessed a protest march for the second day in a row.

تباينت ردود الفعل السورية على خطاب الرئيس بشار الأسد 

 Reactions in Syria to President alAssad's speech have varied.

ويبدو أن خطاب الأسد قد صب الزيت على النار؛ فالاحتجاجات تجددت يوم الأحد

It seems that alAssad’s speech has [only] poured oil on the fire; renewed protests [broke out] on Sunday

شرائح اجتماعية واسعة انضمت الى الاحتجاجات
